The third work package aims to assess the assess the socio-economic performance of different silvopastoral systems, especially in relation to other land use types.
As such, the contribution of silvopastoral system to rural livelihoods, household nutrition, gender and cultural importance will be investigated. This will be achieved via a farm household survey, focus group discussions and key informant interviews in selected Cerrado communities. We aim to select a representative sample of the local population based on farm size, market access, off-farm income, land use practices, and other significant socioeconomic and environmental factors.
We will also analyse the profitability of various silvopastoral system in relation to other land use options by integrating the household-level data with data from secondary sources or collected from a market survey in order to calculate the share in farm income, gross margin, profits, and labour productivity for each silvopastoral system. Monte-Carlo simulation will be used to assess the influence of changing management, market, policy or environmental scenarios on these financial performance metrics.
Finally, we will also integrate data from other work packages (e.g. the spatial data from the first work package, or the data on different ecosystem services from work package 2), in order to establish an integrative model using Bayesian Networks. The integrative model will illustrate the expected supply of various ecosystem services from a range of land uses, including the Cerrado forest ecosystem and silvopastoral systems.
